How do I use a USB flash drive on a different PC?

This post only applies to the Legacy database!

Question:: I watched the video on how to back up to a flash drive. I am still unclear how to go from there. The DB is installed on a computer that is running VISTA. I would like to use a flash drive on a different computer running XP. Once I backup the DB on the VISTA computer to a flash drive how do I start using the flash drive on the computer running XP?  And then I might want to use the flash drive on both computers.

Answer: There are two separate issues here.

1) Doing a periodic backup as a means of disaster recovery.

The backup utility is used for this. When the live database runs from a C: drive, then backup files should be kept on a different drive, preferably a USB drive that is removed from the computer; so, if the computer is lost, stolen, or the hard drive crashes, there is a backup file that will allow complete recovery of the database. A backup file (.bkp) has to be restored before its data is accessible. See this post for details on restoring a database: https://www.approvedworkman.com/forum/index.php?topic=1193.0

2) Moving the database to a flash drive either temporarily (to move it to another computer) or permanently (to maximize portability).

To move the database, most people can use the Cut/Paste technique: simply cut the Approved Workman FOLDER and paste it to a USB flash drive.

At that point, to maximize portability, it can be run directly from the flash drive. See this post for more information about running from a USB flash drive: https://www.approvedworkman.com/forum/index.php?topic=1747.0.

OR, take the flash drive to the new computer and Cut/Paste the folder to the new computer.

For more details on moving the database and exceptions to when Cut/Paste will not work, see this post: https://www.approvedworkman.com/forum/index.php?topic=6.0.
